The recipients of the GAAFS Fisheries Professional of the Year (FPY) in Fisheries Management, Fisheries Professional of the Year in Fisheries Science and Research, and Fisheries Conservationist of the Year (FCY) will go through a more rigorous selection process. Nomination forms have been created to help us determine the top three finalists for each award. Each form includes a set of questions that the nominator will rank 1 – 5. A rank of 5 means your nominee surpasses all others and is a role model for others to follow. We do not expect each nominee to score high for all questions. If your nominee is chosen as one of our three finalists, you will be asked to a answer a set of questions about your nominee.
Each of the finalists and their nominators will be asked to answer a set of questions. The questions focus on taking action, providing solutions/benefits, providing leadership, and sharing of knowledge. Nominees and nominators are encouraged to include pictures that complement their answers to the nomination questions. The answers submitted by the nominees and nominators will be organized and sent to a panel of judges for that particular award.
Each award has its own panel of judges. Judges were selected based upon their expertise and involvement with the Chapter. Our judges do not know who else is on their panel and are asked not to discuss their scores with anyone. The judges are asked to rank the submitted responses among the candidates as their first choice (1), second choice (2), and third choice (3). Responses to the questions are ranked individually. Each candidate is NOT expected to excel on all questions. Judges will send their scores to our Chapter’s designated coordinator where they will prepare the scores for review by the Professional Awards Committee Chair. The nominee with the lowest score will be selected as the recipient of the award. The other finalists will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony as a runner-up and receive a plaque as well.
